Mountain Brook is a city located in Jefferson County, Alabama . As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 20,604. Mountain Brook is a particularly affluent suburb of Birmingham, and is among the wealthiest cities in the United States.
It is the hometown of Friends actress Courteney Cox and is home to Natalee Holloway, who has been missing since May 30, 2005 when she was travelling on a senior class trip to Aruba with 124 other classmates from Mountain Brook High School. It is also home to the two level shopping mall, Colonial Brookwood Village which includes 70+ shops and restaurants with Parisian (which opened in the former McRae's location) and Macy's (which replaced Rich's) as its anchor stores.

There are 8,268 housing units at an average density of 260.8/km2 (675.8/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 98.64% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.22% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,998 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.0% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% are non-families. 22.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the city the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.4 males.
